Sunday to Sunday

Hi, I’m Gurpreet, and if you’ve been to 88 Orchard at any point since January 2019, you’ve probably seen me around. I was born in Queens, grew up in Dix Hills, Long Island, and moved into Manhattan when I was 17 to attend NYU. After graduating, I began working in finance, but realized before long that I was not a good fit. My family pushed me to pursue a career that I could excel in with a smile on my face. In the summer of 2017, I decided that working in food & hospitality would make me happiest, and that constant new interactions with the many faces of NYC would entertain me most. I reached out to an old friend, Ralph Pring, who had by this point managed and opened a number of cafes. Ralph and I sat on a bench on Ludlow Street and I challenged him with the concept of a space that didn’t have to focus on a certain time period for the majority of their sales. I challenged him with an idea for an all day restaurant-cafe-bar. Ralph loved the concept, and was itching to grow past the idea of a simple cafe. We wanted a place that felt like home during every hour and every day, from Sunday to Sunday. Ralph first trained me behind a bar at the place he was then managing, Ludlow Coffee Supply. After that short stint, I went on to work with Irving Farm, as I managed three of their cafes across the city over the next two years (most recently the one in the Lower East Side – 88 Orchard St). During this time, Ralph spent time working with both Dudleys and Little Canal (staples in the Lower East Side), and then more recently helped open a cafe in Gowanus (Bond St Cafe & Goods). By pure coincidence and luck, I learned in early 2020 that the management team at Irving Farm was considering letting go of the store at 88 Orchard. My family and I jumped at the opportunity. We found a way to make ends meet and we were able to take the store over on February 24th. The store was fully renovated within two weeks, and open to the public as Sunday to Sunday on March 10th, 2020. Upon opening, I brought back most of my staff from when the corner was still Irving Farm. Ralph took over front of house operations and has had the team grow around him since. One of my close friends, Alejandro Tress, helped us create a menu filled with small bites and food that could be eaten comfortably at any hour of the day, with a focus on brunch. Today, Guillermo Lopez, one of Alejandro’s friends, helps us keep the menu ever-changing and maintains order in the kitchen. In early 2019, I started dating my lovely girlfriend, Lucie, who is now our Head Pastry Chef for all goodies baked in house, and is also our in-house marketing & social media manager. Lucie has her own incredible back story, that I encourage you all to hear through her voice. Our story continues to change daily, and I will try to update you all as it does, but until then, we hope to see you eating, drinking, and being a part of our community at Sunday to Sunday.
