As reported back on August 7th, the long dormant front gate at 408 Grand Street was suddenly showing signs of life. Turns out that we were right and German supermarket chain Lidl, which boasts 12,000 stores in 31 countries worldwide, is adding to its footprint right here on the Lower East Side. The old Rite Aid space, which was shutdown due to rampant shoplifting, is currently being excavated and repurposed, and is expected to be ready for its new tenant sometime in the spring/summer of 2025.
Lidl made the official announcement on their website last week. The 23,000 square foot space is owned and operated by the Grand Street Guild. Alicia Carmona, Executive Director Grand Street Guild said: “High-quality affordable housing is our primary mission. We also strive to deliver programs and services that make Grand Street Guild a wonderful place to raise a family or age with dignity and ease. Having an internationally lauded grocery store like Lidl US within easy walking distance to our residents is a huge plus for all concerned. We look forward to Lidl US becoming a must-shop destination for all in our diverse community.”
