Van Der Plas Gallery has been a premier contemporary art gallery in New York City for over twenty-five years. Known especially for showing works by a wide range of outsider and emerging artists, the gallery also exhibits many works by academically trained artists from New York City and throughout the world. Founder Adriaan Van Der Plas left his hometown of Vienna, Austria and in 1980, after extensive traveling throughout the Americas, settled in New York City. His first gallery, in the Gramercy Park area, was named Adriaan’s. In 1992, the gallery moved to 89 South Street and became Van Der Plas Gallery. After twenty years at that location, the gallery closed its doors due to extensive damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. Today, Van Der Plas Gallery is located at 156 Orchard Street on the Lower East Side. Mr. Van Der Plas vigorously advocates for emerging artists. He has selected outsider artists, self-taught, and street artists, as well as academically trained artists, whose work he considers to be high-level, original, and worthy of showing. He strives to find art originating from the innermost creative spirit.
